Last night was the presidential debate. So for our opening discussion, we shared our thoughts. We focused on the issue of immigration. We noted how harsh rhetoric directed toward illegal immigrants–”shithole countries”; “poisoning the blood of our country”; stealing and eating pets–can have an impact on all immigrants and even visitors from other countries.

Since today was also the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we talked about where we were and what we were doing on September 11, 2001. Nearly everyone who was alive at the time remembers what they were doing.

We then finished chapter 2 of The History of the English Language. We learned about how the invaders from the north–Angles, Saxons, Jutes–conquered much of England and influenced the English language.

We then listened to and discussed Frank Sinatra’s song, “Come Fly with Me.” Given the fact that the chapter from our text discussed many countries, this song seemed appropriate. We learned words like “toot” and “rarefied,” and discussed how some airplanes used to have two decks with a full-service bar on the second deck.
