Ditto on run-on sentences. When reviewing the correct answers, point out that one can
Make two simple sentences out of the run-on sentence by inserting a period and starting the second sentence with a capital letter.
Make a complex sentence by inserting a comma and a conjunction. No capitalization is needed.
Make a complex sentence by inserting a semi-colon between the sentences. No capitalization is needed. No conjunction is needed.
3. Distribute ditto with two paragraphs: Adventure Sports and Rainbow Rock. Highlight the topic sentence with blue, the support details with yellow, and the conclusion with pink.
4. Ditto containing short paragraphs. Students are to write a topic sentence. (Pair students and allow them to complete worksheet together.)
5. Have one representative from each pair write their topic sentence on the board and discuss.
6. Note: Students had to be aware of not only the three supporting details, but also other clues given off such as the use of “we” would indicate that the writer and a group were attending the event. One paragraph noted “they” (writer not included) saw lions, monkeys, and had a hamburger to eat at the zoo which was bought by John’s father. Therefore, one could not write There are interesting animals at the zoo. because they need to take into account that they ate there as well. (We still have topic sentences 4 and 5 to discuss.)
7. Students brainstormed Publix. All comments were written on board. Students were to take three of the comments that were related and write a paragraph about Publix.
