We had an unexpected week-long break because of Hurricane Milton. This fact prompted our opening discussion: Describe any memorable experiences you’ve had in hurricanes. The ensuing conversation was good for all of us, allowing us to process some of the anxiety we experienced, especially in light of the many tornadoes that struck our area.

We then finished reading chapter six of our text. Along the way, we practiced one of our learning objectives: identifying pronoun references.  We encountered more mentions of Shakespeare in our reading for today. We used these mentions as a means to practice our other learning objective for the term: inferring opinions from speeches and conversations. I described to students some of my experiences watching Shakespeare plays at the Globe Theatre in London; they inferred my opinions.

I had written the first five lines of Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” speech on the board. I asked students to explain the lines in contemporary English. With my help, students translated Hamlet’s musings on life, death, and dangerous enterprises into contemporary English.
