Opening discussion: what have you learned about the Beatles so far that has most surprised you. Fernando’s answer: “I thought they were from the United States.” Others were surprised to learn that they were only together for seven years; still others that they are more popular now than they were in the 60s.
Students then practiced taking notes on lectures. I gave a short lecture entitled, “Three Reasons Why People Love the Beatles.” Afterwards, students compared notes, and I ensured that they included in their notes all the main ideas, supporting ideas, and important details.
We then listened to two Beatles songs: “Love Me Do” and “A Day in the Life,” two very different songs from two very different eras. We analyzed lyrics.
We then returned to our article on ten quirky US cities. Today we covered San Francisco and Albuquerque.
