Opening conversation: Describe some little things from your past that you’ll never forget. We tend to remember the big things in life, both good and bad: weddings, childbirth, on the one hand, and car accidents and death on the other. What about the little things? As we all shared, many of us were moved. One student described licking the batter as her grandmother baked a cake; another student described the smell of a room where he fell in love with a woman.

We then read an article on immigration and GOP rhetoric. The article shows how Republican attitudes toward immigration have changed over the recent years. We had some really interesting conversations along the way, conversations about the differences between asylum and Temporary Protected Status as well as personal stories about the challenges faced by immigrants and migrants–both legal and illegal–that we know.
