Opening conversation: Why do you think that English is the most spoken language in the world? This question prepared the class for our assigned book, The History of the English Language. We traced the rise of the English language historically, noting that it came to prominence through conquest, colonization, and dominance in the capitalist system. 

We first reviewed the glossary of the book. Then we completed some of the pre-reading activities at the end of the book. We read the first two paragraphs of chapter 1. So far, so good!

We ended class by listening to Simon & Garfunkel’s song, “America,” a song that many people who immigrate or migrate to the United States can often relate to.
