Opening conversation: Share with the class one of the best vacations you ever had. Our students have been all over the world: Istanbul, Barcelona, Paris, the Andes Mountains, and all around the Caribbean.

We then listened to Chappell Roan’s song, “Femininomenon,” a song from my Summer 2024 playlist.  Listening to the song and analyzing the lyrics prompted all sorts of interesting conversations. We discussed the historical status of women in the United States and in some of the students’ native countries; women’s rights and bodily autonomy; and “bad” words: what they mean, what effect they have on listeners, and under what circumstances people use them.
