Syllabus
Course Goal
This course will allow students to learn and apply CEFR B1 level listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and strategies. Students will become competent in grammar and vocabulary appropriate to the CEFR B1 level. Students will move from B1 to B2 level.
Student Learning Outcomes

When hearing a narrative about tasks accomplished, you will be able to indicate these tasks on a checklist.
Listen for correct tense, person, and meaning in information questions.
When hearing a conversation about a familiar topic, you will be able to make a deduction about the context.
When listening to an interview, presentation, or lecture on an unfamiliar topic, you will be able to take notes focusing only on key information.

When shown a picture or given a prompt, you will be able to ask and answer questions and talk about the past using the past continuous.
When asked about previous experiences, you will be able to talk about things you have and haven’t done using the present perfect.
When asked about a familiar topic, you will be able to give your opinion and defend it.
You will be able to give a 2 minute planned presentation about your future plans for school, work, or a vacation.

When reading a B1 level non-fiction text on a familiar topic with standard language, you will be able to identify the topic and main idea.
When reading a B1 level non-fiction text on a familiar topic with standard language, you will be able to identify supporting details.
When reading a paragraph that describes a process or time sequence, you will be able to identify the steps in the process or time sequence.
When reading a B1 level narrative text, on a familiar topic in standard language, you will be able to correctly identify and/or describe the setting, characters, character feelings, and important events.

When given a writing prompt, you will be able to write a paragraph using simple past and/or past continuous to write about the past.
When given a writing prompt, you will be able to write an e-mail or instant message to tell about what you did last weekend & what you plan to do next weekend.
When given a writing prompt, you will be able to write a compound sentence and a complex sentence.
When given a writing prompt, you will be able to write a paragraph with a time order pattern.
Course Objectives
Students will develop their ability to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. They will develop their ability to understand the main points of a conversation, interview, or presentation when standardized language is used and is on topics of personal interest as well as familiar themes, such as work, school, leisure, travel, etc. They will continue to build their vocabulary on these same topics.
Students will learn and apply reading skills and strategies to improve comprehension of B1 level texts about a variety of topics. Students will learn how to expand and connect sentences making complex sentences, choosing the correct verb tense to write about topics that are familiar or of personal interest. Students will be introduced to the writing process. They will develop knowledge and skills for writing a paragraph with proper structure and format.
